Self-portrait day today?

As you may know, I graduated a week ago, and since then I’ve had a lot more time on my hands than I’m used to – which also means more time for drawing! I haven’t been very active online the last few months – only checking in on my blog to post 10-20 sketches at a time with little commentary, and I haven’t really been following anybody else’s blogs in that time period either. That’s changing now!
I went to Kirk’s “Dumb Sketch Daily” blog and saw that he did a self portrait today – Apparently he and another blogger (who also posted her self-portrait) have decided that the 25th in each month is going to be self-portrait day!

Why not? If everyone makes something that has the same theme every once in a while, it’ll make for an interesting collection, so I’ll try and get on the “each 25’th of the month self-portrait” wagon!

I actually did a self portrait the other day, but for this  one I decided to bring out our big dressing-room mirror. That way I could sit a little more comfortably while drawing, and also have my whole head in-frame, rather than moving around in order to catch the details in that other little mirror that we have.

I think it turned out pretty decent. Whenever I do self-portrait, I always end up looking a little bored or dangerous.. I think it’s due to looking down on the sketchbook and only “rolling up” my eyes for looking at the mirror, rather than finding a specific pose every time. It was fun to work with a shadow side and a sunlit side of my face, but it might have turned out a bit too dark.

Sketchy self-portrait

It’s been thousands upon thousands of years since I last did a self-portrait. I thought that it was due time than I cram one in there between all the cats. So here’s me with one eye closed. I used that same little make-up mirror that I picked up for this very purpose months ago, and it just isn’t big enough for my head. So it needs to be placed far away, and then I have to squint to see anything and so on and so forth.

The portrait is sketchy – as intended. It only took a few minutes, and I think it actually looks like me. Do I look tired? I am tired. People who know me always tend to disagree about my self-portraits, though. There’s something weird about drawing yourself in that way. At least it looks like a human being, which is reassuring since I would expect it to look more like a cat at this point.

I think that I’ll call it a day. See you tomorrow!

385 Self portrait #33 Drawing with fineliner pen and india ink

It’s been 3,5 months since I last did a self-portrait. I didn’t even realize that. I started out with this as an ink drawing, but was not very happy about it. It was imprecise and a little carelessly made, so I spontanously grabbed a fineliner pen and started drawing on top of it.. I think … Read more
