Hi everyone! – I’m back from my trip to Rome.
I thought that there would be Internet in the appartment, but it never got working in the week that I was there. I could have made an effort out of searching out cafΓ©s and restaurants with free wifi and all that, but I didn’t get around to it.
As with my trip to Prague I’m a little disappointed with the drawings that I’ve made. Traveling is such an opportunity to draw something that’s a little out of the ordinary, but there’s just so much to see in Rome, so I didn’t really have the time to sit down and sketch other than early in the morning or late at night! I even missed a day, which is something I suppose I’d have to face eventually. That’s the second time since I started.
Instead of making a separate post for each drawing, I’m just going to post them all here! I hope you like them, and sorry about the silence everyone π (note that the drawings are in random order)
Quick sketches done in the airplane.
This is a house that I drew one morning from our balcony in Marino, a charming little town some 25km’s south of Rome.
My shoe. I did this one while waiting in the airport.
I really have troubles with landscapes. This looks like nothing. It’s supposed to be a hillside by the Lago Albano lake to the south of Rome
My watch.. One late night after realizing that I hadn’t done a drawing that day.
Another one from beside the Lago Albano.
These 9 drawings were my 475th to 484th drawings.

Welcome back! A nice selection of drawings.
I was recently looking through a book of Cezanne drawings, and was surprised by the simplicity and roughness of a lot of them. Especially landscapes. Here’s one example: http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Paul_C%C3%A9zanne_-_View_of_the_Ch%C3%A2teau_Noir_-_Google_Art_Project.jpg
I think you are being too hard on yourself! Exploring with a drawing is part of the process.
Thanks π There’s something beautiful about that kind of roughness.. Drawing a hill with trees on it is probably a lot about drawing texture actually. The forest seen from afar becomes this puffy mass of different nuances of green with light and shadow here and there.. It looks simple, but I can’t figure out how to mimic it with a pen!
Yes, amazing how simple it looks, but when you try to do it yourself…still I keep trying!
being able to visit Rome is such an experience that I don’t blame you for not having time to sketch. What you DID do is fabulous (as always)…and..you know what they say…”When in Rome…..”
Haha, thanks.. Yes is was really quite an experience.. I’m really looking forward to going to Italy again.. Or maybe Naples or Sicily next time. It’s so beautiful, and people are extremely friendly.
So that’s where you were. Welcome back. Love the sketches.
Thanks π
I don’t think anyone is going to blame you for missing a day of drawing while on your trip! The drawings you did do are wonderful!
Thanks a lot π
Great sketches! Love your landscapes. Love the minimum of lines to convey the scenery.
Thankyou π
I think these are all good but my favorite – as I love the lines – is the view from your balcony in Marino…….the hillside landscape is good too – don’t be so critical of it – the lack of detail makes it appear off in the mist – which is a nice effect!
Pam
Thanks a lot :).. that one was fun to make too!
Such wonderful sketches from your trip! Some people go on a trip and bring back photos… you brought back sketches, which bring wonderful little glimpses of your trip. Thanks for sharing bits of your travels with us!
You’re welcome π
Nice sketches, very cool! Rome is wonderful!
Thanks! Yes Rome’s really a fantastic city
We have been in Rome a few times, there’s a lot to sketch over there. Your sketches are so good, Thomas π Pawkisses π <3
Thanks a lot π If I had more time, I’m sure that I could have got a lot of good drawings out of it. Maybe next time!
