Here’s my 623’th drawing since the 9th September 2014. It’s my hand. I’ve drawn my hand tons of times since i started drawing every day, but recently, it’s all been about cats and dogs – so I thought I’d try another hand drawing. Hands are really difficult – especially since I’ve gotten out of the habit of drawing them. I messed up the proportions quite a bit in this one, and while trying my best to fix them I applied the white guache quite handsomely. Since white guache is waterbased, it’s a really bad idea to apply water-based ink on top, because it’ll just turn into a muddy gray.
It looks pretty sinister, but I had fun with drawing this one. I keep hearing more experienced artists arguing against using all-black backgrounds because it gets flat and texture-less, and while I get that point, I also think that it has quite an effect on the spatiality of the hand. Anyway – the drawing wasn’t very planned – each step is pretty much an attempt to conceal an error in the previous step, but I bet I can learn a lot from working in that way.

Sinister, I like how you say that. I think the flat and textureless aspect applies more to the live art versus the digital version – so that’s more of a concern when selling or dealing with the original artwork, I think. I agree the black background is great here.

The proportions of the fingers are wrong but it’s still a good drawing. Art doesn’t have to be an anatomy lesson after all. Your handling of light and shade and your rendering of texture are great. I like the fact you’ve surrounded it in that blank ink too.

Thanks a lot ! Even if there are rules, they’re meant for being broken 😉 But then again, I’d like to get a sense for some of those “unwritten rules” that many artists abide by.. Because sometimes there’s a really good reason that you just don’t think about, and I’d like my rule-breaking to be a conscious choice rather than just a coincidence.. You can’t know everything though!
