Quick sketch of a guy with his camera

Again a Reddit gets drawn sketch – this guy wanted to have a drawing made of him holding his camera. I wanted to try one of those really quick pen sketches with loosely added watercolor to make it come alive. I often see people making those, and really love how this minimal attack can give really nice results.

I think the last time I tried doing something similar was when I tried to copy some great watercolor cyclist sketches by Maxine Dodd very very long ago.

I actually drew this so fast that I accidentally dipped my watercolor brush in my coffee. But never worry. It tastes just fine.

Self-portrait day today?

thomas-dalsgaard-clausen-2015-11-25c sketchy self portrait

As you may know, I graduated a week ago, and since then I’ve had a lot more time on my hands than I’m used to – which also means more time for drawing! I haven’t been very active online the last few months – only checking in on my blog to post 10-20 sketches at a time with little commentary, and I haven’t really been following anybody else’s blogs in that time period either. That’s changing now!
I went to Kirk’s “Dumb Sketch Daily” blog and saw that he did a self portrait today – Apparently he and another blogger (who also posted her self-portrait) have decided that the 25th in each month is going to be self-portrait day!

Why not? If everyone makes something that has the same theme every once in a while, it’ll make for an interesting collection, so I’ll try and get on the “each 25’th of the month self-portrait” wagon!

I actually did a self portrait the other day, but for this  one I decided to bring out our big dressing-room mirror. That way I could sit a little more comfortably while drawing, and also have my whole head in-frame, rather than moving around in order to catch the details in that other little mirror that we have.

I think it turned out pretty decent. Whenever I do self-portrait, I always end up looking a little bored or dangerous.. I think it’s due to looking down on the sketchbook and only “rolling up” my eyes for looking at the mirror, rather than finding a specific pose every time. It was fun to work with a shadow side and a sunlit side of my face, but it might have turned out a bit too dark.

Come see my past self portraits too

Sketch of Vladimir Putin seeming less than amused

thomas-dalsgaard-clausen-2015-11-25a portrait of vladimir putin in pen

I did my angry Erdogan sketch earlier, so here’s Putin. You could argue that there’s something uniquely fitting about his facial expression. But then again – this is just how he always looks. His eyes got a little wobbly. I can’t seem to draw portraits with aligned eyes – at all. On my previous baby portrait, Laura commented that she thought it looked cute. I’m not 100% sure that the same goes for Putin, but I’ll let you judge that one.

Putin is next in line for my “Rulers of the world” project where I will eventually draw every head-of-state in the world.

Angry portrait of Turkish president Erdogan

There’s some crazy stuff going on in the world, and my intention is not for this sketch to be a comment on a conflict that I don’t understand even a fraction of. This is Turkish president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the middle of a very agitated speech – the photo is from google images and has nothing to do with today’s event, but I think it was a good exercise in sketching a very expressive face.

I used to do this series of “Rulers of the world” where the idea is to make a portrait of each head of state in the world. I stopped before I was half-way there, but why not add another face to the list today?

Little face in profile

Once you get started with Reddit gets drawn it gets hard to stop! People just keep posting great photos to draw from!
I rarely draw in profile, so this one was fun. I really like the white skin against the black background. The woolly clothing was and remains a challenge. I haven’t figured out a great way to render that..

This was my 745th sketch since the 9th September 2014!
