I think that i could benefit a lot from letting each individual layer dry before continuing with the painting – right now, I’m finishing it all in one go, and that might be the reason for the somewhat “muddy” colors. Especially the darker tones.
As for the figurative aspect of the painting, I’m more satisfied. I think it shows some emotion.

This is very good! You captured the values. I would not call what you got from this painting as mud. Some colors, layered after drying, will still produce a gray as you have achieved, here. Play with color layers on a separate sheet of paper, layering them and discovering what you may want or see in your mind’s eye. …but I see no mud here.
